The Police Service has denied reports that members of the Northern and Upper East Regional Police Commands went on rampage on Wednesday October 27, intimidating residents of Nankpanduri in the Bunprugu Yonyoo district and burning some properties.
Police Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori told Citi News the police have only embarked on a special exercise to capture and bring to justice the notorious murderer and three time jail breaker Johnson Kombian, who shot and killed two police men on 17th October, 2010.
Kombian who is a native of Nankpanduri is believed to be hiding in the area.
According to the Police PRO, although the special exercise will cause some discomfort as it requires some restriction of movements, the residents must cooperate with the police to bring Kombian to Justice.
“No police or group of police officers is on rampage. The exercise is not aimed at promoting violence. The cogent reasons for this special exercise embarked upon by the Upper East and Northern Regional Police Command supported by officers from Accra, is to ensure that we do everything possible to locate, restrict and arrest Kombian, who killed two police officers some days ago. We are using best practices and operating within the armpit of police procedure and the law” he stated.
“But in such special internal operations, there might be some restrictions regarding movement of people because the person (Kombian) we are tracking is very violent and perilous in nature. So we agree that police coming to the Bunprugu Yonyoo District on such an exercise might make people inconvenient in their movement and activities, but they must bear with us because it is a legitimate operation” he noted.
Meanwhile residents in the area say they live in constant fear of the notorious robber who is sometimes seen in broad day light wielding weapons and intimidating people. The Chairman of the Nankpanduri Development Association, James Conlan, said the police must exercise some restraint.
“My advice to the police is that they should cool down and re-strategize because if they enter with violence I know it is not going to be easy for them arrest him. And whatever information they want about Kombian, they should contact us and we will tell them whatever we know. The last time I spotted him is about three days ago and I am very scared even as I am speaking to you because if he finds out, I will be a target” he said.
