Twenty-year-old Doris Lomotey, who attempted to smuggle dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp to her husband serving his sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, has been grabbed by the Nsawam District Police Command.
Doris Lomotey is alleged to have stashed the Indian hemp in a pair of shoes, in addition to other items, as a parcel to the husband, Francis Waohai, who is serving an 18-year term for robbery.
She has been remanded into prison custody while investigations continue. Briefing Daily Guide, Superintendent Samuel Buabeng, Nsawam District Police Commander, indicated that suspect Doris Lomotey went to the Nsawam Medium Prisons on December 31, 2010 around 10:30 am to visit the husband as she usually did.
He said items she took along included clothing, shoes and others. "At the prison's check point, the prison authorities realized that the inside part of the sandals had pushed up a bit but sealed perfectly."
Superintendent Buabeng continued that when the shoes were examined, they found the leaves stashed in there and sealed. The prisons authorities handed her over to the police for investigations. "The exhibits have been sent to the forensic laboratory in Accra for examination while investigations continue," he added.
Doris has been remanded into prison custody.
