A 35-year-old man has found himself in the firm grips of the Ashaiman branch of Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for allegedly fingering his biological 9-year-old daughter at New Prampram, near Afienya in the Greater Accra region.
The suspect, Christian Hassey, a driver from Agave Agbeve in the Volta region who currently resides at New Prampram, was said to have indecently assaulted his 9-year-old daughter with his fingers on several occasions.
Information gathered by Daily Guide from a source close to the Unit indicated that the suspect and the complainant, who happens to be the mother of the victim, were a married couple and had two children aged 6 and 9 years respectively.
About a year ago, the couple started having marital problems and the couple got divorced, with the mother of the victim vacating her matrimonial home to Madina in Accra and leaving the children behind for the suspect to take care of.
The source stated that on October 15, 2010, the suspect sent the children including the 9-year-old victim to their mother at Madina for holidays. The mother, who was bathing the victim, detected that the girl experienced pain around the vagina whenever the sponge she used to bathe her got around the vagina, adding that when victim was confronted she mentioned her father, Mr. Hassey as the cause of the pain.
The girl explained to her mother that her father had on several occasions inserted his fingers into her vagina. A complaint was immediately lodged at the Ashaiman branch of DOVVSU where a medical report form was issued for the victim to visit the Tema General Hospital for examination and treatment.
The result from the hospital confirmed the offence, compelling the police to arrest the suspect who vehemently denied the offence in his statement to the police. The suspect, according to the Daily Guide's source, would be arraigned before the Ashaiman Circuit Court for prosecution when investigations are concluded.
