A 17-year old girl has died after setting herself ablaze at the at Teshie police barracks in Accra. Esi Aboagyewaa decided to end her life by pouring kerosene and lighting herself up.
She was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment but passed away Thursday.
The reasons for her actions are unknown. Joy News’s Anna Agyepong spoke to Esi’s best friend and neighbour, who gave a chilling account of the incident. She said she was in the kitchen when she heard mournful groans and dashed out only to find her friend enveloped by fire and reeling on the ground. “I shouted from the balcony and ran down, calling people to come and rescue the girl,” Esi’s friend recalled.
She said the deceased never said anything about maltreatment that could drive her to such an extreme end. The police have begun investigations into the matter.
Teshie District Commander, DSP Samuel Tibil Punobyin said when the police responded to the distress call, they found the deceased badly burnt. They rushed her to the hospital where she later died.
