National Open Chess Championship comes off on May 24

This year’s National Open Chess Championship will be played at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra on Saturday, May 24. Mr Edward Thompson, Vice chairman of the Ghana Chess Association who announced this in Accra on Monday said about 100 players throughout the country are expected to participate in the competition which is being sponsored by Johnnie Walker Company Limited. He said the one-day event is aimed at revamping the sport which is almost dying as a result of lack of sponsorship and regular competition. Mr Thompson said the association has put in place adequate preparations to ensure that competitions are played frequently to sustain interest of the sport especially by the youth. The Vice Chairman expressed the hope that corporate bodies and institutions would come to the aid of the association for the development of the sport.
