This year's edition of Miss Ghana 2008 was officially launched over the weekend at the Airport West Hotel in Accra dubbed "The Dream" amidst cultural Ghanaian display worth watching. The launch started with a live band performance of some wonderful Ghanaian compilations to welcome guests to the show. It was attended by the crème de la crème of entertainment fraternity and was characterized as usual by the pump and pageantry associated with previous editions.
Managing director of Sparrow Productions, Miss Shirley Frimpong -Manso, in her speech said, she indeed find the night a memorable one for the sparrow team as they celebrate their fifth anniversary of the Miss Ghana Pageant. According to her, in five years over a thousand young and intelligent women have sort this crown but only four have realized their dreams and the fifth is in the making. Miss Frimpong-Manso also urged all young women to dream big and participate in the Miss Ghana Pageant because with them (Sparrow Production) the world is literally theirs to take.
The Sparrow Production boss, who look immaculate in her purple outfit also confessed that sustaining the Miss Ghana pageant has not been on a silver platter, she said "we've had our fair share of controversies as have been the norm, we've had our day in court and have taken this challenges in good stride and have become better with each passing event". She also assured Ghanaians that the company is not going to leave any stone unturned to ensure that standards are not compromised
On her part, the Golden Jubilee Queen, Miss Frances Tekyi Mensah, said, she still cannot describe how she felt that very night she was crowned Miss Ghana @ 50 and to her it's not only beauty but beauty with hearts and brains. She said, "It's been exciting and a worthwhile experience, not that excitement that comes with the title, but the excitement and satisfaction that comes from healing the wounds and renewing hopes of the less fortunate in the Ghanaian society"
The twenty- two year old student of the University of Ghana, added that she is very content with her charity work and most privileged to work with the United Nations Population Fund, which raises and spread awareness about dehumanizing condition that has been relatively neglected despite the devastating impact it has on the lives of girls and women in Ghana. "It has been a very swift year and now I can barely catch my breath, but it has been more than worth it and I owe it all to God" she concluded.
Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Dep. Minister Water Resources Works and Housing, launching this year's pageant said "the entertainment, fashion and beauty industries have certainly grown as the impact of pageants increases. It's for this reason that as given me joy to be here today as we launch yet another Miss Ghana pageant in honor of our nation, its people, its culture and especially its women'
Mr. Joe Baidoo-Ansah, the Deputy Minister for Tourism also noted that the Miss Ghana Pageant is the longest running pageant in which the winner bears the name of country, hence it is imperative to consider the fact that we all work to make this year's event a success.
He added that this year's event, which will once again search for a beautiful mind, would also expose how the women of this nation and indeed the world over have come a long way to assert for themselves. The final event will come off on the 5th of July, 2008 at the National Theater. The show was emceed by Messer Godwin Avenorgbor.
