This year’s Miss Communicator- Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ’s) version of a beauty pageant- held at the Coconut Groove Regency Hotel in Accra, was hit by controversy when the ‘wrong’ person was mistakenly crowned the winner.
When the MC Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) of Radio Gold fame announced the winner as contestant number five, Miss Beatrice Ampomaa Frimpong, little did he know that he was given the wrong number.
It was however detected that contestant number two, Miss Beryl Adom, a level 100 student studying for a diploma in Communication Studies, was rather the winner on the judges’ cards.
The situation infuriated KOD so much so that he could not bear the embarrassment and had to storm out, never to return to accomplish his assignment as MC for the night.
The first and second runners-up position went respectively to Selma Baba and Nana Adjoa Darkoa, both level 100 students studying for Diploma Communication Studies.
The other contestants were Mavis Nana Ama Mensah, Harriet Esi Mensah, Noela Adeyiga, Victoria Asante Dompeh, Theodora Fafa Dotse and Betty Acquah.
The contest did not live up to its billing as most of the contestants did not display the required intellectual acumen. They kept on fumbling on simple questions.
There were real moments of education by the contestants as they took the audience through some of the problems affecting women in Ghana.
Mrs. Yvonne Nduom, wife of Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) was the guest of honour.
