Cech: We made our own luck
Chelsea's Petr Cech praised his side's resilience after they scraped a late levelled in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool, and insisted that the draw was deserved.
A cagey, back-and-forth affair was swung in Liverpool's favour just before half time, after the Reds capitalised on some shaky play from Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele, with Dirk Kuyt muscling in and slicing the ball between Petr Cech's legs.
Chelsea had a couple of good spells in the second half, but it wasn't good enough from Avram Grant's men, as the game looked to be heading for a disappointing defeat.
However, right at the death, substitute Salomon Kalou did well to swing a ball across goal which fellow substitute - Liverpool full-back John Arne Riise - made an absolute hash of it, as it ended up in his own net.
After the game, Cech admitted his side got lucky, but suggested it was well deserved on their part.
"We've been unlucky in our last two semi-finals here," said the big goalkeeper after the game.
"This time we got a lucky goal. But to be fair, we kept playing until the very last second. We pushed - and we deserved it."
Liverpool fans may disagree with that, but what cannot be disputed is that the Blues have their noses ahead in this closely contested tie.
