Tudu Mighty Jets lifted themselves up from the bottom rungs of the Premier League standings when they chalked a lone goal victory over Dansoman Liberty Professionals on Thursday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Substitute Sidi Abubakar scored the only goal of the match that separated the two sides in the final encounter of the ninth week 2011/2012 Glo Premier League.
The moral boosting win gave Mighty Jets a huge lift to the mid-table at the expense of visiting Liberty Professionals who finished the game with 10-men after midfielder Christopher Nkansah was sent off in the second half of the local derby.
Liberty have themselves to blame for failing to scoop a point in a game they were gifted with several scoring opportunities especially in the first half.
Youngster Michael Appiah was the worst culprit as he fumbled on two occasions with a 38th minute chance more easier to score than miss. Pacy midfielder James Abban laid a cross to Appiah but he shot wide with only Mighty Jets goalie Shaibu Issahaku to beat.
On the stroke of half time, Mighty Jets had their turn as Kofi Owusu's response from Jacob Quao’s corner-kick missed target narrowly.
The second half was balanced before Mighty Jets took over after Nkansah was sent off on the hour mark after a second yellow card for a reckless foul on his marker.
The numerical disadvantage worked in Mighty Jets’ favour and they shot into the lead on 66 minutes through Abubakar with a spectacular shot past on rushing Liberty goalie Akwasi Acheampong after Owusu had put him through.
Five minutes later Liberty had a good chance to draw even but Appiah lobbed wide of target from close range to give the maximum points to Mighty Jets.
