When solid rock is exposed to the wind, rain and frost, it gets broken up into small particles. If the particles are small enough, they are considered sand.
The main place where sand is formed is at the beach. The tide hitting the rocks and the wind rubbing the rock particles together form the sand. The desert is another place where sand is found. The sand may have been formed by the decay of rocks or by the wind blowing it there. In some cases, the sea dried up and sand was left in what is now a desert.
