The Chairman of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Samuel Sackey was overcome with emotions and shed tears when he visited the Tarkwa Central Prisons and saw Drivers serving various jail terms.
Mr Sackey had led members of the Union to the Prisons to donate various items to the inmates at the weekend. He said the continual flouting of road traffic regulations by taxi drivers was a major challenge to the Union.
He said the Union had organised a series of educational programmes for its members on the proper road usage, driving with appropriate driver’s licence, use of seat belts and driving in approved sandals. The Union presented three and half maxi size sacks filled with bathroom sandals; sugar; gari; milk and minerals valued at GH¢ 600 to the inmates.
He said the sandals were confiscated from drivers, who refused to wear the appropriate sandals while driving, adding that it was the second time that the Union was presenting items to the Prisons. An inmate thanked the Union for the donation and urged others to follow its example.
