The President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills says government is committed to equipping the Ghana Navy to enable it protect the country's oil and gas resources and to enhance the security of the state and deal with criminal activities on the high seas.
He said the country's maritime landscape has changed drastically because of the oil find and there is the need to fortify the navy to protect this important national resource.
This will enable it also to deal with economic saboteurs such as smugglers and cocaine dealers as their activities affect the national image.
President Mills gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith at the inauguration of a new ship, the GNS 02 for the Ghana Navy at the Takoradi naval Base.
