Kokomba Youth Forcibly Release Suspect From Police Custody Website
A mob at Nkwanta in the Volta Region on January 11, this year intercepted a Police vehicle and forcibly released a suspect being taken into custody for allegedly possessing firearms without permission. Mr Joy Afagbedzi, Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said while on a routine patrol and observation duty in the Nkwanta township, police picked Yaba Mabeli, the suspect at Komi No 2, a suburb, with a Baikal shot gun and cartridges. He said the youth, carrying machetes and cudgels blocked the Police vehicle number GP 1216 on its way back to the police station and threatened to beat up the officers, including Mr Douglas Kumah, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of the Nkwanta District, if Mabeli was not set free. Mr Joy Afagbedzi said in spite of an intervention by the local assemblyman, the unruly youth went ahead to forcibly release the suspect from police custody.
