Awutu Breku - a village which is about an hour's drive from Ghana's capital Accra will be transformed in November because its favourite son Michael Essien will be storming the area.
Michael will not be alone on the visit to his home town. He will be accompanied by Purepersona (his event orgnisers), the Michael Essien Foundation team, key Managerial personnel from Chelsea football club,Chelsea Foundation and TV as well as the official Chelsea photographer. Also present will be Right to Play
Michael and his entourage will be in Awutu in aid of the Michael Essien Foundation which is a local Ghanaian charity founded by Michael himself. This Foundation aims to create opportunities, hope & inspiration for the underprivileged in the Awutu Breku area mainly and the world at large where possible.
Some of the goals of the Michael Essien Foundation are to promote basic community amenities and opportunities for various groups through different projects and activities.
To this effect PurePersona have been tasked with planning events in line with the goals and the foundation will hold a day of activities each year targeted towards children, youth and/or the Awutu Breku community as a whole. There is a Five year project in place to ensure the community enjoys the benefits of the Foundation
This year's activities have been dubbed “A Day with Michael Essien”. It will be on the 16th of November 2010 and will consist of the following events:
- A Book Launch - which is an initiative by the Michael Essien Foundation, in association with Chelsea Football Club, Right to Play, Pearson Education and the Ghana Ministry of Education. The project dubbed, "Reading Goals" is to inculcate basic reading habits in children with the introduction of kids books
- Commissioning of a water bore hole and a ten-seater public toilet
- A Sports Day for children in the wider Senya Bereku District where there will be games of football, volleyball, netball with over 5000 kids expected to attend
The last time Michael was in Awutu was last year after the launch of the Foundation and he was mobbed by his people and fans and it is expected to be the same this year. There will definetely be Happin'ESS' on the day
