A 65-year-old farmer has been slapped with a jail term of 21 years by a Kumasi Circuit Court for defiling an 11-year- old girl.Akwasi Addai pleaded guilty to the offence.
Police Detective Inspector Martin Assenso told the court presided over by Mr Justice William Boampong that the complainant, Hawabu Shaibu, is a trader at Tetrefu in the Bosomtwe District where the convict also lives with his three children.
On Boxing Day, last year, she left to a nearby community, Sewua, at about 1800 hours to grind her millet and asked the victim and her two other siblings to stay in the house. The young girl decided to draw water from a stream and there met Addai, who grabbed her, gagged and sexually assaulted her.
The prosecution said the victim told the mother about her ordeal and a formal report was made to the police. He said doctors who attended to the victim confirmed in their report that “the girl’s hymen had been broken.”The convict was therefore arrested and after police investigations charged with the offence.
