A group calling itself Committed Members of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has threatened to drag the former presidential candidate of the party Dr. Edward Mahama to court.
Their claim is that Dr. Mahama and some other executives of the party have breached the party’s constitution. The 2008 PNC presidential candidate is also said to be nursing ambitions to lead the party again to the 2012 elections after three failed attempts.
The group is accusing Dr. Mahama of deliberately refusing to organize a national congress where executive members of the party would have to be elected. He is also alleged to be financing a campaign in the three Northern Regions in his name. Leader of the group Dr. Somtim Tobiga told Citi News Dr. Mahama has breached the constitution and his group will not hesitate taking legal action against him.
Alhaji Ramadan Mahama and Dr. Edward Mahama appointed the first, second and third vice as members of the national executive committee (NEC) which positions are supposed to have been elected. So we are arguing that both the NEC and the National executive council are illegal therefore Dr. Mahama’s position is not supposed to be there” he said.
“He should respect the constitution because if you are going to lead this country, then you must respect your own constitution. It doesn’t make sense for a leader of a political to violate his party’s constitution to get to power. This is the beginning of dictatorship and that’s why we are notifying him that the money he sending to Upper East, Upper East and Northern Region plus the vehicles he is sending for them to begin campaigning for him, is going to be null and void” he noted.
It will be recalled that prior to the 2008 elections, a group of disgruntled PNC executives dragged Dr. Edward Mahama to court to stop him from continuously holding himself out as leader of the party.
The plaintiffs said he did not qualify to contest any presidential election on the ticket of the party and so wanted him declare be declared ineligible. But they did not succeed. Dr. Mahama contested the 1996, 2000 and 2004 presidential elections on the ticket of the PNC and lost all. ?
