With a string of firsts making her career in the radio industry, Doreen Wilhelmina Ekua Andoh has emerged as the Obaahema of the airwaves in Ghana today. Consider her achievements: In June of 2001, Doreen was the first - and only Ghanaian woman to date - to receive the Best Presenter of the Year award for 2001.
Doreen made her debut in radio, as a news reader for the popular Accra based radio Station, Joy FM in 1995. Her love of music later drew her to deejaying which turned what she once considered as a hobby into a successful career in broadcasting. That career has taken her through a series hosting and co-hosting of programs on radio and television and eventually to her current position as the host of the, The Cosmopolitan Mix. A show she has championed for the past six years.
Miss Andoh’s success has inspired her to give back to the community by using her show as a channel to share inspirational, health, and lifestyle advice with her listeners daily. “To me, my greatest achievement is continuing to make my listeners happy,” says presenter. Doreen's positive attitude and personable on-air delivery coupled with the hottest R&B, hip-hop and old school jams brings a refreshing flare to her listeners’ workday.
Asked what her prospects were for the future, the deejay hinted a possible interest in the television industry –maybe follow in the footsteps of her role model, Oprah Winfrey. “There isn’t very much out there that I would exchange what I’m currently doing for. Knowing that I am making a difference in someone’s life is a very rewarding payoff for me right now. However, if I should ever decide to move on from here, I’ll probably do something in television, if anything at all.” In addition to her broadcasting success, Doreen has both created and appeared in several television and radio commercials for local companies.
Doreen comes from a family of five with her parents Wilfrid Andoh, a Pharmacist and Beryl Andoh, a Computer Analyst being a great source of inspiration for her. She started her education at Tema Parents Association School and attended St. Roses Sec School and Holy Child School for her secondary education. After which she attended Ghana Institute of Journalism and took courses in Public Relations and then to Columbia School of Broadcasting in the United States from where she graduated in 1998.
Her advice to other Ghanaian women hoping to reach greater heights; “Life is pretty simple, first of all you have got to have a dream and then you have to believe in your mind that you can achieve it then you can start working towards achieving your dream” .
