The Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has ranked its national senior players (men and women) as part of on-going local preparations ahead of future international competitions.
The ranking was the second in the series, after the D.G. Hathiramani Memorial Open Championship held in November last year.
Sources close to the GTTA indicated that the ranking exercise, sponsored by Squadron Leader Ebo Bartels, Chairman of GTTA during a two-day knock-out and all-play-all National Open Championship, took place at the D.G Hathiramani Sports Hall, at the Ohene Djan Stadium, from 25th – 26th April 2008.
The following players who make up the top 8 male in order of ranking are Derek Abrefa from the Ghana Immigration Service; Christian Aboagye of the Ghana Police Service; Ernest Quarcoo, Greater Accra Region; Eric Addo and Bernard Joe Sam from the Customs Exercises and Prevention Service(CEPS); Mohammed Ali Jnr from Agona Swedru in the Central Region; Emmanuel Commey of Ghana Immigration Service; and Lamptey Mills of the Ghana Police Service.
The top 8 female players in order of the current ranking are Bernice Borquaye of the Ghana Armed Force – Navy in Takoradi; Lynda Annor from Ghana Immigration Service; Akosua Ketu from Agona Swedru in the Central Region; Eva Ampah of Koforidua in the Eastern Region; Abigail Tetteh of Ghana Immigration Service; Efia Oforiwah Owusu-Agyei of CEPS; Dorothy Oboubi and Comfort Adjoa Ampah both of A.M.E Zion Senior High School, Winneba in the Central Region.
Some senior players who are missing in the current men’s ranking, the likes of Eric Agyeman of the Police Buffalo Unit; Solomon Akonnor of CEPS; Asafo Adjei and Essel Kobina both of the Ghana Air force, emerged 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th respectively in the previous ranking.
Others in the women division are, Doreen Nettey from Immigration Service and Francisca Amankrah from the Ghana National Fire Service. They have both lost their previous ranking positions of 4th and 5th respectively.
According to Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jnr, Secretary General of GTTA, “It is the hope of the association that players will continue to train hard to sustain the current healthy competition which is emerging in the on-going ranking exercise.”
He thanked all sports officers of security services as well as the Regional Sports Development Officers of the National Sports Council who sponsored their players to participate in the aforementioned ranking exercise.
“GTTA is also grateful to Hon. Prince Oduro Mensah, Chief Executive of National Sports Council (NSC) for his singular support to the promotion and development of Table Tennis in the country,” he concluded.
