GOLD FIELDS GHANA LIMITED, main sponsors of the senior national football team, the Black Stars, has embarked on a new drive towards ensuring the country’s qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The 2010 World Cup, the first ever mundial to be held on African soil, will undergo a first phase of qualifiers beginning on the 1st of June, 2008.
The Black Stars will pitch their strength against their Libyan counterparts in Kumasi, followed by encounters with Lesotho and Gabon.
Gold Fields Ghana, which has demonstrated unrivalled support and allegiance down the years, is committed to easing the way for the Stars to shine brightly.
Ghana qualified to the 2006 World Cup with support from Gold Fields worth $3 million. The company has since extended the deal to a whopping $3.7 million for the next three years.
Gold Fields Ghana Limited therefore urged every Ghanaian fan to lend their support and passion to the national cause of reaching yet another World Cup final.
The managing director and head of Gold Fields operations in Ghana, Johan Botha, was confident in the ability of the Black Stars to cross all hurdles to qualify for Angola and the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa.
“I have no iota of doubt in the Black Stars ability to sail through to fully participate in both tournaments in 2010. The Black Stars have done it before and are well positioned now than before to prove their mettle”.
He however cautioned the Stars to make it a point to first win the game on 1st June in order to set the pace for the string of successes that lies ahead of them.
The head of Corporate Affairs and Social Development of Gold Fields, Toni Aubynn was proud to say that the sponsorship of the Black Stars is associated with the company.
He noted that the Stars have done it before and will therefore do it again on Sunday June 1st.
