The Ghana Athletic Association is desperate because only two athletes have so far qualified for the August Olympic Games.
Sprint Queen, Vida Anim, and Seth Amo are the only two people who have booked their places among the world's elites as Ghana's medal haul could suffer a jolt if the other athletes currently in Cologne, Germany, fail to make the qualifying mark.
Six local athletes, all sprinters, are scheduled to leave the shores of Ghana to join their colleagues in Germany on Monday to compete in series of qualifiers between now and July ending. They will be led by Coach Emmanuel Moses and his assistant, Amuzu Logosu.
Shepherd Agbeko, Nathaniel Kpegbah, Laryea Akrong and Victor Togoh, plus two ladies, Victoria Sarfo Kantanka and Janet Amponsah, are expected to jet out to join the foreign legion.
Already, Elizabeth Amolofo and Rosina Amenebede have joined the ladies quartet team of Vida Anim, Esther Danquah, Gifty Addy and Mariama Salifu for the final preparation at improving on their time.
The men relay team who are 0.02sec away from the qualifying mark are said to be in high spirits following the return of Aziz Zakari to the team. Aziz was banned after testing positive to a banned substance.
The compact side made up of Aziz, Seth Amo, Eric Nkansah, Laryea Akrong, Harry Adu Mfum and Cecil Ferguson could increase the number for Ghana if they are able to make the mark.
Prince Oduro Mensah, Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, painted a frightening picture a fortnight ago when he announced that the country would compete in only two disciplines because the other disciplines failed to qualify.
Apart from the two track and field athletes, boxing is sending six strong representatives to the Games.
Ghana's female relay team who won bronze at the last African Championship dropped in the current IAAF rankings from the 14th to the 17th position.
Only the first 16 teams qualify automatically for the games in Beijing, China.
