Last Sunday’s edition of Ghana’s Most Beautiful reality show came with one of the true reflections of richness inherent in Ghana’s culture. With Gideon Ayequaye as MC, all eight contestants were made to showcase their talents as regards playing their respective traditional drums. One after the other, the ladies mounted the stage and did this extremely well, to the satisfaction of the studio audience. Alongside renditions of traditional songs as well as dancing, the ladies explained the historic background and significance of the drums they played. This was basically to enlighten the public about tradition. While most of them managed to win the praises of Judges Efo, Linda and music legend Ebo Taylor, a few others fell short of praises. Fanny, from the Central region who played the Atupan, had the utmost exaltation of the night. She was the only lady who had a standing ovation from Efo for her excellent dexterity. The night’s performances began with Abena, the Ashanti Region contestant. Trying hard to imitate her mensfolk, she played the Fromtomfrom well. After her was Rafiatu from the Upper East Region who enthralled the audience with her calabash drum. Akua (Eastern Region) emerged with a red and black coloured drum and performed the Kete. The red and black colours, she elucidated, were “blood of my forefathers and the darkness of war” respectively. Even though her gig appeared cool, it did not attract the commendation of the judges, since according to them, she had missed some salient touches in her act. Ruweida from the Northern Region performed with the Dondo drum. Adelay, the Greater Accra representative got the audience to sing along when she started with her Gomey presentation. However, she could not sway the fans along with her drumming as the tempo with which she kicked off slowed down. Eyram, the Volta Region delegate also played the Boba well but arguably not to the satisfaction of all. Erica from Brong Ahafo, the last to perform, indeed set the stage alight. Finally, when it came to eviction time, Rafiatu was the next to go. On hand to add more colour to the show was the National Dance Company. Come Saturday, an eviction party would be organized for Rafiatu at the Colisum Nite Club where a lot of the country’s hip life artistes would pass through. Tinny, Asem and TV3’s mentor stars such as Joe, and Dela are just but a few artistes on the bill. Ghana’s Most Beautiful, one of the country’s best reality shows, is sponsored by Onetouch, Unilever –Geisha, PHC Motors-Tatasafari, Virgin Nigeria, FC Klinik and Angel Cream.
