A cross-section of football fans in Ghana have expressed worry over the inability of local television stations to beam the ongoing Euro 2008 championship.
Most football fans DAILY GUIDE SPORTS spoke to were of the view that corporate Ghana should have assisted the TV stations to beam live, this all-important championship.
“It is unfortunate that we are missing the excitements in the ongoing championship which to my estimation is equal to the World Cup,” Kwasi Yeboah of Taifa lamented.
“I can’t believe that Ghanaians are missing the best competition in the world,” Kofi Essuman of Cantonments complained. “We watched it live four years ago when Portugal hosted the competition.”
Most Ghanaians have resorted to watching the games from cinema halls and small video theaters, paying fees ranging from GHp20 to GHp30.
A visit by DAILY GUIDE SPORTS to some of these centers revealed that it was mostly the youth that were seen patronizing the matches.
Interestingly, some ladies were also seen watching the games with passion, as some of them have shown liking for players such as Christiano Ronaldo of Manchester United and Portugal fame, Deco of Barcelona and Portugal and Ruud Van Nisterlrooy of Real Madrid and Holland.
Evidently, Ghanaians are addicted to European football especially the Barclaycard Premiership in England and the Spanish La Liga shown regularly on Metro TV and TV3 respectively.
Meanwhile the competition has reached a crucial stage with the battle for qualification taking center stage.
Czech Republic clash with Portugal while co-host Switzerland battle Turkey. Both the Czech and Portugal will be looking for a win to advance to the knockout stage.
