A member of the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has called for the dissolution of the entire committee for its inept handling of affairs leading to Ghana’s non-inclusion in the first edition of the novelty Africa Nations Championship.
It is a competition under the auspicies of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) aimed at creating a platform for local players on the continent.
The inaugural competition is slated for February next year in Cote d’Ivoire but the Black Stars’ appearance has run into trouble on account of having missed out on the draw for the competition.
Already CAF has traced the source of the problem to the door steps of the GFA as it claimed it had long sent registration forms to the FA.
But Mr Kudjoe Fianoo, a member of the committee, insists that the Executive Committee including himself, must take collective responsibility for the problem, adding that by their act the nation has lost a great opportunity to develop her local talent.
According to him, long before the Nations Cup kicked off in Ghana this year, officials of the FA were aware of the competition and had the luxury of time to confirm the country’s participation but strangely failed to act and allowed themselves to be drowned in the euphoria of Ghana 2008
On the FA’s claim that it was not aware that CAF had sent forms to Ghana to confirm her participation in the competition, Fianoo argued that was no excuse as some FA officials were at a CAF emergency congress in South Africa last year where the decision was taken and the date set for the inaugural competition.
“In fact, they were given registration forms, and all present were made to confirm their participation by the end of November last year, a date fixed for the closing of the registration of participating nations.”
“However, the FA strangely decided not to act on the matter as it did not even feature on the agenda of the Executive Committee meeting after the Nations Cup, and the committe itself failed woefully to put the matter on the table,” he stated.
He noted that after massive investments by the government to improve the sporting infrastructure, the nation cannot afford to lose such an opportunity that could give the neccesary exposure to local talents.
This, he said, was a betrayal of the intentions of those running the game in the country, most of whom are not interested in the local competition.
