21-year-old Alberta Nana Adwoa Arhin was last Friday given the mantle to represent Ghana at next year’s International Exquisite Face of the Universe pageant show. Out of the eleven delegates who did the catwalk in self-designed costumes, only one had to wear the crown and the performance of all the ladies clearly showed that they had prepared their heads for the silver tiara.
With wild hairstyles, the ladies, with beauty and style mounted the stage with admiration from the crowd at TV3 Studio B, displaying the designs of some local fashion designers. The other delegates were Faustina Ghansah, 21, Siba Sappor, 24, Deborah Olaga, 26, Angela Surag Danbanki, 21, Hanna Hulley, 21, Delight Adouguba, 21, Matilda Mawuena Mikekpor, 27 and 17-year-old Leena Abdul-Wahed. Three of the ladies were given special awards for distinguishing themselves in various categories. The award for Miss Congeniality went to Matilda, Leena took the Miss Photogenic award while Alberta’s calabash custom won her the Miss Creativity award.
The event, which was known as the Model of the Universe, started in December 2006. Jon Germaine was the MC for the programme. Prior to the final stage five of the eleven ladies were selected. But for the cheers from the crowd one could have heard the heartbeats of the contestants as Jon called out their names. However the musical interlude and commercial break seemed to have eased the tension in the five, who catwalked in beautifully designed clothes by Seyi Jones Designs, AISHA Designs, Walter Woods Collection and Ghandi and Co. After that came the final selection.
In the end a panel of four judges including a former Miss Universe, Pearl Amoah, Kofi Kapito, Aline Badr and Seyi Jones adjudged Alberta winner.Nana Yaa emerged the first runner-up, with Matilda being the second runner-up. For their prizes, Alberta gets a brand new car from Universal Motors, a ¢10million cheque, a fridge from Somovision and one year supply of wigs from Darling.
Nana Yaa also received a ¢5 million cheque and an LG television while Matilda took home ¢3million and a DVD player from Somovision. In separate interviews with Beatwaves, the winners couldn’t hid their joy while Alberta pledged to put in her best to ensure she wears the ambassadorial crown when representatives of over 40 countries gather in Ghana in February 2008 for the “Exquisite Face of the Universe 2007”. Miss Estonia, who was Model of the Universe 2006 and came second at the international event, advised the new model to “live up to the challenge and be a true model for the universe.”
