The military is said to be a multifaceted institution. There are musicians, doctors, nurses and even military police men in the service; in fact, one would find every profession in the military.
Thus it would not be surprising to learn that Agya Koo, the comedian turned actor and musician, now dines and wines with the top brass of Ghana’s military.
Is it true he has been recruited into the army? If so as what? Is he to act, mount stages and crack jokes to entertain the security personnel or he is rather to train them in ‘gyimilogy’?
These are some of the possible questions that would run through the minds of many upon reading the headline above.
It was at a programme at the Castle which had the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor in attendance that Agya Koo the ‘military man’ showed up.
The President had arrived in the company of the chief of staff, Kwadwo Mpiani and other senior government officials.
Other dignitaries at the programme included the Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Minister of Defence, Albert Kan Dapaah, Minister of Interior, Kwamena Bartels, the National Security Coordinator, Dr Sam Amoo Quartey as well as other top officials in the country’s security services.
Fred Amugi, who was the MC for the function reached for the microphone to call out the items on the programme brochure he had (which others did not have).
The MC’s voice came through the loud microphone: “Let’s welcome Agya Koo”.
It was at that moment that all eyes turned toward the MC and for about three minutes there was no Agya Koo. Then everyone started looking out for him, expecting to see him with his face painted and in civilian attire.
All of a sudden he appeared right in front of the gathering, smartly dressed in the kind of military attire normally referred to as the Camouflage, with a microphone in hand.
People were heard saying he would have looked like a fine military man, army officer or naval officer but for the rings and necklace he wore. With the microphone in hand he did what he knew best, as he sung songs from Nana Ampadu’s album with the support of the police band. He later cracked some hilarious jokes as usual which sent all present including the dignitaries laughing to the extent of even shedding tears.
It was all joy at the end-of-year VIPPU WASSA party at the Castle gardens when Agya Koo joined the military and other security services to celebrate the day.
