Valley View University Students Invent Mim System

Valley View University (VVU) has outdoored a new Medical Information Management(MIM) System, “Health Level Seven,” which is a globally recognized electronic data used in the interchange of standardized information on health care. The system developed by Mr Nelson Mukuze and Mr Kwadwo Debrah Boafo, final year Computer Science students of VVU, for medical institutions is a Message Standard Protocol also used to support testing of message formats of data exchange among hospitals and health organisations. The system initiated by the two young inventors was unveiled at Valley View University’s Annual Information Communication and Technology Exposition on the theme: ‘The Role of IT in the Socio-Economic Development of Ghana,’ at Oyibi, near Accra. Speaking at the programme, Mr Ernest Attuquaye Armah, Deputy Minister of Communications, applauded the students and the school for the initiative and urged them to continue with such innovations as they could contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. “Technology is regarded as the primary engine of every economic growth and provides the key to open any country’s potential. Therefore any country that wants to develop has to invest significantly in Information Technology (IT),” he said. He noted that government would soon develop a programme aimed at serving as guide to the recruitment of Information Technology and Information Management personnel into the public service. In addition, government would continue to partner with the private sector in exploiting opportunities to promote efficient and effective use of IT to generate wealth for the nation, he said. Professor Daniel Buor, Vice Chancellor of the University, cited China and India as some of the countries which had exploited the maximum use of ICT for socio-economic development. “The success of India in the use of ICT in transforming its economy, following the example of China, should be a classic model to third world countries,” Prof Buor said. Mr Henry Quarshie, Dean of the Institute of Computer Science, said the ICT Expo is organized yearly to showcase completed research projects by students which were of national interest.
