The school was started as Ghna College on 12th January,1960 as one of Ghana's post- independence school.Two streams of 35 each students started.All the 70 students were boys.It was the following year that seven girls were admitted.The first girl admitted was transfer case from Yaa Asantewaa Secodary School,Kumasi.She was Salamatu Alhassan.The first Senior Prefect was Abu Kassim Tahiru(1960-1964) from Kwame Danso.

Lauching of Rocket
On 28th June 1970 a rocket manufactured by an Indian maths teacher,Mr Lalaji and his science students ,was launched in honour of the then Minister of Education Mr William Ofori -Atta.On July 1 1970, the event was shown on national TV.
School Motto
The motto was first ''Volatus qualae'' meaning the. flight of the eagle.This was later changed to ''Dani Suma ni Suglo'' by Ahaji B A Fuseini(Headmaster 1973--1981).The meaning is good intentions and patience in Dagbani.
Change of name
At the end of 1972 the Minister of Education instructed all secondary schools with the word college in their names to change them to reflect secondary status.
On 4th March1973,managementcommittee met and suggested ''TULABI ''.On 15th June,1973, the committee met again and finally agreed on ''Ghana Secondary School'',Tamale.
The 6th form course was introduced in October 1976.
