Takoradi Polytechnic has announced that it would introduce new special and non-tertiary programs for the oil and gas industry from subsequent academic years beginning from 2011.
The special programmes include welding (City and Guild), America welding society certificate, logistics and transport (CIIT), Air craft maintenance and the non-tertiary programmes includes CTC (part I,II,II), MVT (part I, II, II) among others.
Mr. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Rector of Takoradi Polytechnic, in an interview with GNA on Thursday September 16, said the institute had upgraded its syllabus to address the needs of the oil and gas industry in the country.
He said the new programmes would afford technical and vocational students the opportunity to be trained and be resourceful in the oil and gas industry.
Mr. Eshun said Tullow Ghana Limited was prepared to assist in the training of students who are interested in the industry, adding that the institution has trained students who are already working in the industry.
He said the polytechnic seeks to promote industrialization and economic development for the western region and Ghana as a whole.
He noted that the vision of the polytechnic was to achieve excellence in manpower training and action research in order to provide support to industry and commerce in the area of human resource development in the country.
Mr. Samuel Tsibuah, Industry Liaison Officer of Takoradi Polytechnic, said the institute is seeking more collaboration from stakeholders in the oil and gas industry since it is the closest to the oil field.
He urged the general public to take training programs and education in the oil and gas sector seriously to be abreast with the current developments in the industry.
Mr Tsibuah said the institute is collaborating with institutions abroad to introduce more programs.
